    NYC Marathon training Speed work
     #22 runner.  Passed 1 runner.
Or should it be "MooseAndPenguin"? @BigRed68 already has dibs on coaching Team #penguin if there ever is one, but no one has laid claim to coaching #MooseAndPenguin yet.
  • BigRed68 Oct 2

Just one today, but trying to start going some speed work. Team moose, I guess because that most resembles my running style Although if there were a team penguin, that'd be ideal. Since I'm doing 13.1 at MDI, 26.2 over two weeks should be doable.
As a member of Team #moose that is technically Virtual Millinocket. Shall we put you down as a member of both #moose and #lobster (Virtual MDI) and split the 26.2 miles down the middle for each team? (Maybe there will be a Team #penguin next time, and you could be coach.) If you are heading over to Sidestreet Cafe after MDI, we'll see you there! Will be wearing a "Hello my name is @AOMM" placard.
@AOMM Doing 13.2 live at MDI and live at Millinocket, so why not split the 26.2 down the middle.

Thanks to all participants in the #lobster vs. #moose challenge...and the winner of Round #4 is #lobster, with 584.4 miles to moose's 545.5 miles. Time for tiebreaker Round 5, with miles logged from Dec. 9 through Dec. 31 determining which team is King of the Acadia to Katahdin Virtual Race. Not too late for new folks to sign up for the virtual race, or one of the teams. While miles can be backdated to July 20, ohly the ones from Dec. 9 through Dec. 31 count toward the tiebreaker. Optional team medals can still be custom ordered, just tag me here or on Facebook, and I can e-mail invoice. #lobster won, with 584.4 miles, thanks to you and other fellow crustaceans. #moose not too far behind at 545.5 miles. Tiebreaker Round #5 goes from Dec. 9 to Dec. 31. See final spreadsheets here: https://www.facebook.com/gr...

Here it is - #lobster won, with 584.4 miles, thanks to you and other fellow crustaceans. #moose not too far behind at 545.5 miles. Tiebreaker Round #5 goes from Dec. 9 to Dec. 31. See final spreadsheets here: https://www.facebook.com/gr...

Only one more day until the end of Round #4 of #lobster vs. #moose, virtual MDI vs. virtual Millinocket, and the running of the real-life Millinocket Marathon & Half, and out in front is ... #lobster! Will #lobster still rule at the end of the day Dec. 8, after the real-life running of Millinocket on #moose's home turf? As of 7 a.m. this morning, lobster at 407.8 miles, moose at 400.2 miles. See latest spreadsheet at the Facebook group page: https://www.facebook.com/gr...

Best wishes to all the Millinocket racers this weekend! Wish I could be there to cheer and celebrate. Sounds like fun to connect with other virtuals. Good job as well to all who participated in this fall challenge.
Thank you @bgizzi - can use all the best wishes to keep us warm! And thanks for being part of Team #lobster. About to tally up the semifinal results, #moose vs. #lobster. May be the best animal win!
Pardon typo. Make that, "May the best animal win!"
  • TomZot Dec 4
Half marathon bib # 118. Just got the email. BTW...a buddy has asked me to help him break 2:00 for the half. If anyone wants to come along please do. Weather predicted to be brutal so no guarantees.
I will be looking for you! Don't think I will break 2 on this one, cold air is going to slow me down. But, hope to be in just over. My number is 389!
@KDW 👍. See you tomorrow! I'm a bit concerned about it as well...but we'll get it done. No frostbite though...if we have to stop to warm up I'm not gonna rule it out.
  • AOMM Dec 2
Just featured latest virtual race map with all those in or near Millinocket, in the Facebook group page. https://www.facebook.com/gr... Hope to see as many virtual racers as possible in Millinocket next Saturday! Will be uploading a virtual race bib to the Facebook group page for those who dare to wear it and reveal themselves in Millinocket. One version of the virtual race bib will have a #lobster, another a #moose and maybe there will be one with both a #lobster and #moose!
It will be close but I might make it virtually to Millinocket by Saturday!
  • AOMM Dec 1
Main virtual race medal ceremony in Millinocket next Saturday is at the Sawmill Bar and Grill, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and not ending until @Mamaof7Dogs finishes and comes get her medals! Plus medal presentation to @mak321 (and maybe also @KDW ) at the mini golf fundraiser for the Millinocket Memorial Library between 2:30 and 4 p.m., where we can also have a #moose vs. #lobster mini-golf competition if there are virtual racers in the area. Plus also we'll be stopping by honorary #moose coach Tricia Cyr's Moose Drop In to present her with honorary #MonsterMoose medal. Details of the moveable virtual awards presentation are in this Facebook events listing: https://www.facebook.com/ev... Hope to see the following virtual racers at the Sawmill or elsewhere in town (pardon if we don't know who else among the virtual racers will be there - everyone is welcome!): @BigRed68 @TomZot @LibertyPenguin @Keefa @sstpierre @Fossil @Christa @JillMarie63
Checking my list, checking it twice, and I see now these other virtual racers are signed up for the real-life Millinocket race. Hope to see you at the Sawmill on Saturday beginning at 5:30 for the main virtual race awards ceremony, or elsewhere in town as detailed in the Facebook events listing. Anyone who wants to pick up custom optional #moose #MonsterMoose #lobster or #lobstrosity team medal in Millinocket would need to order by tomorrow at noon. Just tag me and I can e-mail invoice. Here are others I see are signed up for Millinocket. If you've already received your virtual race medal in the US mail, still come by and meet fellow virtual racers at the Sawmill. Or if you haven't received it yet, you can come by and pick it up (otherwise it'll be sent via US mail). @Lishie @SarahBG @KDDID @Dear @KPS @wanderingmaine @GeoJill
and don't forget the Sunday Fun Day Recovery Run Day 1k! https://sfdrrd1k.eventbrite...
To benefit the Millinocket Historical Society!
I don't think I'll be finishing this relay. I've been down with a cold for most of the last 3 weeks. My training for Millinocket took a massive nosedive. I'm still coming up to cheer and support but the likelihood of me running the race is low. (Yes I know I could run/walk or walk the event)
@Lishie - actually, this race is extended through at least Dec. 31 (but will be sending medals out to everyone after Dec. 8). Hope you feel better - and if you want to join us at the virtual race meet-up at the Sawmill at 5:30 on Dec. 8, can even give you your medal then.
  • AOMM Dec 1
Round #4 spreadsheet is up on the Facebook group page, and #lobster is ahead, 202.2 miles to #moose miles of 183.6. That's as of noon today. If anyone wants optional team gear to be picked up in Millinocket next Saturday, let me know by noon tomorrow, so that the custom medal can be delivered in time. I already have on order the optional team medals for @Mamaof7Dogs @JillMarie63 and @KDW See Facebook group page here for details: https://www.facebook.com/gr... Will also be announcing meet-up times for next Saturday - it will be a traveling virtual race medal ceremony in various spots in Millinocket, so stay tuned!
    1
And if anyone wants to order custom medals to be sent via US mail, feel free to tag me anytime, doesn't have to be by tomorrow at noon. Already in the US mail are the #lobstrosity medals for @FL2ME and @JohnT

Then Round 4 starts Sunday, Nov. 25, and concludes on the day of the real-life Millinocket race.

There seems to be a temporary server issue tonight. Have e-mailed racery about it, but they may not get the e-mail until tomorrow. Multiple attempts to post might lead to duplicate entries once server catches up, but I can e-mail to get that fixed if that happens. Also, will be posting spreadsheet update for #lobster vs. #moose tomorrow.

Just uploaded photos on the Facebook group page of the optional medals: #MonsterMoose #lobstrosity #moose #lobster lobstermoose and MonsterMoose-lobstrosity https://www.facebook.com/gr... You can tag me in the messageboard or in your virtual race entry if you want to order optional medal, and I can e-mail add-on invoice. Postage included, same price of $18 for all versions, double the usual percentage going to charity. Medals ship after Dec. 8, or sooner if already completed 337.8-mile route. Medals can also be picked up during Millinocket Marathon & Half weekend, during virtual race meet-up that will be announced soon.
I'd like a moose medal please.
@JABandMom - #MonsterMoose (2 moose) as you've done 10 or more miles in 1 day, or just 1 moose? Will e-mail you add-on invoice, and can mail it with your official Acadia to Katahdin Finisher's Medallion. Thanks for being part of the virtual race!
@AOMM I'd like one with 2 moose. I will be at Millinocket Marathon & Half and would like to pick it up then.
@JillMarie63 - will e-mail you invoice and also let everyone know time and place of virtual race meet-up and medals pick-up. Thanks for being part of the virtual race!
    I’d like lobstrosity!
@LizInTheWoods - you got it! Will e-mail the invoice and send the #lobstrosity medal along with the official Acadia to Katahdin Finisher's Medallion - now that you just finished. Congratulations! You can keep logging miles through Dec. 8, both for Team #lobster and for extra entries in the gift giveaway.
I don't know how busy our Friends of the Library mini golf will be, but I hope as many virtual runners as possible will drop in to say "Hi"! I expect to be working there Friday and Saturday afternoons, probably noon 'til 4 or 5. It's a block from the race start. Most likely, it will be open before race time with hot chocolate and coffee available. I wlll be at the start line at that time, cheering on all you real runners! ~Margie
@mak321 - hope to stop by and maybe play a round or two! Will you be volunteering at the real-life race registration as well? If so, can send you your medal early to wear, as I think you did last time, and that's how you might have met some of the virtual racers in 2017. Also, does the library take donations of gear (thinking running shoes) at its Katahdin Gear Hub? Or are there are other in-kind donations the library might need? Saw someone coordinating a canned food drive during bib pick-up. And thought maybe if there's a way to put lightly used running shoes to good use, being able to donate them through Katahdin Gear Hub or some other non-profit, that might be something worth chipping in on or, dare I say, helping to coordinate....
I did meet people at registration last year! Someone else is handling registration this year and I won't be involved. The library is accepting gear for the Hub. I'll check with Matt and see if he could put the shoes to use. I'll get back to you. It seems like they could be used somewhere in town. Thank you for asking!
Here's what our Library/Gear Hub Director Matt had to say: "the Katahdin Gear Hub could definitely definitely definitely use bicycle donations and bicycle parts donations!" Bikes are harder to pack than running shoes, lol! Maybe some people have parts to donate? I guess he doesn't have a use for running shoes. Thanks for reaching out!
@mak321 - thanks for the update from Matt on the Gear Hub. Will put word out about bike donations, parts, etc. And maybe will look into likely nonprofits in the area who might be looking for running shoe and other similar donations. Open to ideas if you have any! Looking forward to meeting you in real life!
    #monstermoose Medal for me, please!
@KDW - will email invoice and medal will be on its way!
    I would like #Lobsterosity

Congratulations to Team #moose who won Round #2, 609.4 miles to #lobster 543.1 miles. And congratulations to those who met their 2-week personal mileage goal or made the MonsterMoose or Lobstrosity elite clubs. There's enough time for 2 more rounds between now and Dec. 8, so if #lobster can win the next 2 rounds, it'll be a tie. Otherwise it's a moose stampede. Details in latest Facebook group page post: https://www.facebook.com/gr... Round 3 begins today, Nov. 11, and lasts through Nov. 24. If you were in Round 2, you'll automatically carry over with the same team and personal mileage goal. And if you're not on a team yet, you can tag me here to say which team, and your 2-week mileage goal. Not too late to invite family, friends and running buddies to join the virtual race, as they can backdate miles to July 20, and count the Nov. 11-Nov. 24 toward Round 3.

Hello @GeoJill - welcome to the virtual race! Feel free to ask any questions you may have. And also just wanted to share a couple of sub-challenges we have going on, if any of these interest you: Join either team #lobster or #moose for Round #2, where you set a 2-week personal mileage goal, starting Oct. 28 - if you meet your goal, you get an extra entry in gift giveaways happening after Dec. 8, plus you add to the team total. Another sub-challenge if you're into long runs, hikes or walks and like Stephen King, courtesy of @Ghost - for each day's entry of 10 miles or more, dedicate it to an SK novel (or movie to stretch the rules a little bit). You can backdate miles as far back as July 20, and you can keep logging until Dec. 8. Thanks again for joining.

i tried being on the #moose millinocket team, but got put on lobster...can anyone help?

Just stay on Lobster with us underdogs!
Hi @wanderingmaine - welcome! I can put you on the #moose spreadsheet on this end. But if you want to change the groups field, go to your bio and click on edit. Then in the groups field, type moose WITHOUT the hashtag. And if you want to be counted in the Oct. 1-14 Lobster vs. Moose challenge, just let me know how many miles of the nearly 50 you just put in were from between Oct. 1 and today, and I can add you to the spreadsheet under #moose. Let me know what you think your total mileage between Oct. 1 and Oct. 14 will be, and if you meet that goal, you get an extra entry in the gift giveaways. There will be more 2-week #lobster vs. #moose subchallenges after this first round. (And if you want to be part of the underdog Lobster as @JohnT suggests, you can be on both teams, and I'll split your mileage 50-50.)
@AOMM hello there...just got home a bit ago, from MDI!! so since today is the 14th....all the mileage i gave here was for oct 2 to now. my goal had been minimum 5 miles per day.
Hi @wanderingmaine - just reread this, about your goal being minimum 5 miles per day. Was that from Oct. 1-14, or Oct. 2-14, for your daily goal? Just wanted to update the #moose spreadsheet. And would that be the same 2-week goal for Round #2?
  • AOMM Oct 13
Posted latest spreadsheet, 419.1 #lobster miles to 422.9 #moose miles, just before midnight on 10-12. Will #lobster catch up with #moose by Sunday, when real-life and virtual MDI happen? Hi CaptDave! Can you please let me know which version you have? We're taking a look into this! :) Lesley
@RaceryLesley version of Racery? How do I find that out
Hey there! I think we may have the issue fixed :) Can you please try again? If it doesn't work, my next step will be to see if updating to the newest version of software on your iPhone fixes it for you. We'll get this figured out and thank you for letting us know! Lesley
    @RaceryLesley it worked!! Thank you

I’ve been unable to post mileage tonight. Some kind of connection problem. Not sure if it is on my end or app but figured I should let you know
    2
Did you try this morning? And if it still doesn't work, let me know how you're trying to log the miles - on laptop, via iPhone or what have you - and I can e-mail racery.
@AOMM. Tried again today from both iPhone and iPad. Getting same “gateway timed out” error message. Thanks

As of lunchtime today, spreadsheet shows #moose ahead 344.4 miles vs. #lobster miles of 309. See spreadsheet snapshots at Facebook group page, and feel free to let me know if any miles missing, or if anyone has any questions about the moose v. lobster challenge. https://www.facebook.com/gr...

Welcome to @KDDID and @FL2ME to team #lobster. This morning's tally has #moose at 316.9 miles and #lobster at 269.9 miles. Updated spreadsheet being added to Facebook group page: https://www.facebook.com/gr...

And members of Team #lobster - if you want to join the Racery group by that name, all you have to do is go to your bio and edit it, and then in the groups field type lobster - without the hashtag. Here are the members of #lobster so far: @ZombieChop @Shellperry @JakeD @CindyLouWho @LizInTheWoods @bgizzi @sarahJSG @LibertyPenguin @BigRed68 and @JohnT . The Racery group adds all your miles from July 20, so that's why I do the separate spreadsheets for the Oct. 1-14 challenge. And if you're also in the #moose group, you'll just show up twice.

OK members of Team #moose - if you want to join the Racery group by that name, all you have to do is go to your bio and edit it, and then in the groups field type moose - without the hashtag. @JillMarie63 is already in, and here are names of the other members so far: @JABandMom @JakeD @KDW @Swollenknee @4000footer @mak321 @LibertyPenguin @Dear @KPS and @BigRed68 . The Racery group adds all your miles from July 20, so that's why I do the separate spreadsheets for the Oct. 1-14 challenge. And if you're also in the #lobster group, you'll just show up twice.

#moose pulled even further ahead as of end of day yesterday. #lobster needs those real-life miles from MDI next Sunday to catch up. 206.1 miles to 135.1 miles, #moose to #lobster. See updated spreadsheets at Facebook group page: https://www.facebook.com/gr...
Hmm. Maybe I should join Team Lobster. All I do is add the hashtag? Do I have to do it on every run? Can I count runs back to October 1?
I can add your mileage to October 1 for #lobster and update the spreadsheet. Next entry that you make, just type #lobster Virtual MDI plus however many miles you think you will personally do between Oct. 1 and Oct. 14. If you hit that mileage goal, another extra entry in the giveaway for you! I'll be inviting everyone who's picked a team to a couple of new groups I'm forming, #lobster and #moose. But because the racery groups lump all team members' mileage back to July 20, I'm doing the Lobster vs. Moose spreadsheets so we can keep track of team and personal totals for the Oct. 1-14 period (Round 1, with more rounds to come - think the next round will include Halloween, in honor of SK).
@JohnT - just tallied your miles back to Oct. 2 - didn't see an entry for Oct. 1 - and it's 47 miles - including today's 6.2. If there's anything missing, let me know how much and what day. You know how to look at your own race log to see your daily entries, right? That's how I tallied all your miles. You might singlehandedly help get #lobster back in the running, making honorary coach Gary Allen proud!
Awesome! I figured I might be able to help make it competitive
  • AOMM Oct 6
Just put up snapshots of Team lobster vs. moose spreadsheets on the Facebook group page, and moose is ahead as of this morning by a virtual antler: https://www.facebook.com/gr... Also, I'll be inviting those of you who have signed up for the teams to join the groups that I will be creating by those names. Because the racery groups lump everyone's miles from day 1 (July 20) into the team total, I had to create spreadsheets to tally up the Oct. 1 - 14 team and individual miles separately, for Round #1 of lobster vs. moose, that runs through Oct. 14. Not too late to join in if you haven't already. All you have to do is type in your racery log "#lobster Virtual MDI 26.2" or "#moose Virtual Millinocket 26.2" (or however many miles you aim to do between Oct. 1-14), and I'll add your miles to the team spreadsheet. If you meet your 2-week goal, you get an extra entry into the gift giveaways.

Hi everyone- Our Cross Country team at Vermont Technical College is doing one of these races as a fundraiser and we are trying to get as many people as possible to participate. The money we raise will help us pay for our trip to nationals in Virginia. If anyone is interested, the link is below: https://vtcxc.racery.com/r/... . Thank You!

Neat, another racery race! Will check it out - although not sure if we can do 2 racery races at once?
Hey @MattK - if people just wanted to make a straight donation to the Cross Country Team without necessarily signing up for a virtual race, is there a Web site or address for that?

@Ghost and @BigRed68 - does a moose feature prominently in any of SK's writings? Just curious, as I'm looking at the virtual moosehead on the course map, created by the jaunt over to Schoodic and back, along part of DEST and Route 1.
The novel "Dreamcatcher" centers around a group of guys hunting at a cabin in the woods. I think they were hunting deer not moose but I'd have to go back and check. It's beem awhile since I read it
Had to Google that one since nothing immediately came to mind. No actual moose that I know of (King seems to only use wild animals that can be sinister--crows, wolves, weasels, etc.). There is a Moose Sadler who is one of the bullies in IT, and a Moose Cove and Moose-Lookit Island in The Colorado Kid (the book loosely adapted into the tv show Haven). That's as close as I could find.
    Thanks @BigRed68 and @Ghost !

For clarity what activities are allowed in this virtual race?
    2
Generally running, hiking or walking, but as it is a virtual race, rules are flexible. If you do a different workout, but feel it's the equivalent in calories burned to 1 mile walking, then that would be OK to log a mile in our book. Each of us may have different motivations, and may personally feel right about logging some types of miles, and not others. Not hard and fast. Hope that helps!
A rule of thumb that may be helpful: 30 minutes of intentional activity = 1 mile (or if it's a really super-aerobic activity, then perhaps 15 to 20 minutes = 1 mile). Not sure step-counting around the house or the office would count though, as that doesn't seem intentional. And biking 10 miles probably doesn't translate to walking or running 10 miles.
  • AOMM Aug 15
Just added digital-only registration option for virtual racers (no medal), for people who don't want any bling. If any of you already in the race decide you want to do the digital-only option, you can email me at acadiaonmymind@gmail.com. And if you have any family or friends who might have been on the fence about the race, feel free to let them know about the digital-only option, listed on the registration page. The more the merrier!

For those of you who track your elevation, just discovered a way to post here on Racery, see https://racery.com/faq/#Q6 I track the elevation of my runs -- is there a place for me to track that with Racery? Start adding elevation gains to your mileage submissions in a comment by putting "+" in front of the number of feet you’ve gained. If enough people use the +, we’ll start tracking elevation and giving awards!
    2
And this answers how to delete incorrect mileage and reenter: https://racery.com/faq/#Q7
Actually, not sure if this FAQ about deleting miles works. Best to enter it correctly, or adjust for it with subsequent entries, or email team@racery.com. Hopefully the FAQ about entering elevation works, if you're so inclined (pun not intended haha!)

@Keefa - running Great Cranberry 100 today? Good luck - and to any other virtual runner doing 100 miles in one fell swoop, on a small island off the coast of Mount Desert Island. Those 100 miles will put you near the front of the race - watch out @Ghost ! See the Facebook group post about this at https://www.facebook.com/gr...
Haha - I see GCI 100 isn't until next weekend - so I wish you luck next weekend, @Keefa !
    Good luck @Keefa !
@AOMM @JohnT thank you it is going to be interesting. Not sure how the road will do but maybe better than a mountain. Well faster. Cannot wait though!
@Keefa - say hello to @DreadedRunner (Rebeccah Geib), as she's another person signed up for GCI 100. So great to see your progress with all the running!
@AOMM will do. She will probably kill this race like she did the virtual race last year! Thank you also. This will be another attempt at 100 miler. This will be a different creature though since it is road with hills and not mountains. Although hills always make it a challenge no matter how big or small!

Help raise funds for Acadia National Park and Millinocket, the gateway to Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, by participating in the 2018 virtual edition of the Maine Sea to Summit series. Earn a medal (or two) at the same time!

Check out the Race Medals!

Start on top of Cadillac in Acadia, the highest point on the US Atlantic coast, and the first place in the US to see the sunrise between October 7 and March 6.

Then run the Mount Desert Island Marathon and Half Marathon route, and head north for the Millinocket Marathon and Half route.

Finish atop Katahdin, the highest peak in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

Wherever you are in the world, you can participate virtually by running or walking and logging your miles. Watch your avatar move along on a map from Cadillac to Katahdin, including the routes of the MDI and Millinocket Marathon and Half Marathon, the 26 peaks of Acadia and other special sites along the way.

You have until December 8 to complete the route. To ensure you cross the finish line and to take into account any mileage rounding issues, be sure to log a few extra tenths of a mile. Registration ends December 8 and your special finisher's medal(s) will be mailed within 3-4 weeks after the end of the race, if not sooner.

Special pricing for registrants in the real-life 2018 MDI and Millinocket Marathon and Half Marathon. We will cross reference the real-life entrants' list and if runners don't appear then the virtual fee will be forfeited. Option to add on a special buffalo-plaid beribboned medal from the previous version of the race, when it was called the Cadillac to Katahdin Virtual Run.

At least 5% of gross proceeds from the race go to help support Acadia National Park via the nonprofit Friends of Acadia, and Millinocket via the nonprofit Our Katahdin and Millinocket Memorial Library. Brought to you by acadiaonmymind.com and runmdi.org.

We've got racers all over the globe! To keep everyone on the same page, we've come up with some handy guidelines:
  • • We rely on the honor system... you don't have to use a device to prove your miles -- a good map suffices.

  • • Please only backdate mileage to July 20

  • • No step counting, please use intentional miles.

  • • Only walking or running miles please! (NOTE: miles on a racer’s personal log are for all races they are in, over all sports)

  • • Please attribute your mileage to the appropriate day -- don’t combine mileage from multiple days.

  • • Miles submitted after the race ends will not count toward race leaderboards.
