Welcome to the Tunnel to Towers Virtual Run for COVID-19 Heroes.
Tunnel to Towers has been supporting our heroes on the front lines since 9/11. From our police, firefighters and military, to today’s health care workers who are on the front lines battling COVID-19, Tunnel to Towers is there.
In response to this pandemic, the Foundation has established the COVID-19 Heroes Fund to support the families of health care workers who lose their lives to COVID-19, and leave behind young children. The Foundation is also supplying our heroes on the front lines with food and personal protective equipment.
In these unprecedented times, it’s paramount to do all we can to follow guidance and maintain our health while demonstrating our appreciation for the courage, heroism and sacrifice of the men and women fighting to keep our communities safe.
You can show your gratitude by joining this virtual event and fundraising to support our heroes fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
This 135-mile run takes participants on a virtual tour of the firehouses of 9/11, though the five boroughs of New York City, the epicenter of this pandemic in the United States.
You can compete by yourself, or create or join a team of up to 5 people using the team drop-down menu during sign up.
Beginning in Bronx, NY, the route passes firehouses that lost members on September 11, 2001, culminating with the final footsteps travelled by Stephen Siller, the Foundation’s namesake.
You’ll pass five other firehouses before the route enters Manhattan. There, you’ll pass FDNY’s Engine 37 and 31 more firehouses, as you travel to Engine 10 and Ladder 10, in downtown Manhattan.
Next, you'll skip the bridges and tunnels and find yourself in Staten Island, NY where the route then travels the distance between FDNY’s Battalion 22 and Ladder 13 to Rescue Company 5, then heads to Ladder 166 in Queens, NY and zigzags between the numerous firehouses in Queens and Brooklyn, NY until you get to Engine 205 and Ladder 118 in Brooklyn.
From there, you’ll follow in the final footsteps travelled by Stephen Siller, our Foundation’s namesake, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others on September 11, 2001.
Want to run or walk somewhere else? Just log your activity and see yourself move on our map and leaderboards.
Get a Google Street View of your virtual locale, and cheer on your real fellow racers.
And keep up with the Tunnel to Towers virtual race community on Facebook by liking this page:

Here are handy guidelines for this virtual event:
- We rely on the honor system, you don't have to use a device to prove your miles
- Because of COVID-19, please log your physical activities inside! This is a virtual run and any indoor activities can be converted to “miles” for the route
- Please attribute your mileage to the appropriate day - don’t combine mileage from multiple days
- Miles submitted after the race ends will not count toward race leaderboards
- Once your team completes the route - keep going! You can ‘loop’ the course until the race closes on May 8, 2020
Having trouble joining the Virtual Run for COVID-19 Heroes?
Please make sure to select or create a team before trying to hit the JOIN button. The JOIN button won't turn green until all of the necessary information is filled out.
