From June 17 to July 19, 2019, Seeds of Change is inviting you to Go For Grow! Join Seeds of Change on a virtual marathon through Kenya as we raise funds for Mission Grow.
Mission Grow represents an effort to transform living conditions in Africa by improving agricultural yields through education, funding and technological modernization. By using what God provided – the sun, the soil and the seed – Mission Grow teaches sustainable, economical agricultural practices that enable sub-subsistence farmers and their families to obtain food security and improved livelihoods.
Over the course of an eight year partnership with Farm Input Promotions Africa, Mission Grow has reached over 475,536 beneficiaries and disbursed 5,963,490 technology products. Lace up your shoes and help us raise funds to continue this amazing program!
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
RACE FOR FARMERS ABROAD!
Go For Grow starts on June 17. You will have until July 19 to complete the 26.2 mile route, meaning you don’t need to run a full marathon in one go; you can do a mile a day or whatever suits you best. A virtual race can be completed from any location you choose – at the gym, walking the dog, or even at another race. This is an all-exercise race, so you can participate in other physical activities, like cycling, yoga, HIIT training, or whatever gets you active to get your ‘miles’ in.
Read more in the Race Guidelines below.
This virtual marathon winds through Makueni and Machakos Counties in rural Kenya where Mission Grow is impacting thousands of farmers and their families. It begins at Kakuswi Special School for the Deaf, a school located in Tawa, Kenya that provides hearing impaired students with educational and vocational skills that allow them to live successfully and independently - school which Seeds of Change supports. From there, you'll head northeast through Makueni County before entering Machakos County. The route winds in an easterly direction through cities and the countryside of Machakos County before entering the beautiful Katunga Forest. The remaining 1.5 miles of the race takes you through Katunga Forest, ending at its northern tip. But, since this is a virtual marathon, you’ll get to experience the work Mission Grow is doing in rural Kenya without stepping foot in Kenya itself!
Sign up as a racer, and as you move along the route, you’ll pass different points of interest, each with significance for Seeds of Change. Click on each red pindrop to read about Mission Grow’s transformative work in Kenya.
FUND FARMERS ABROAD!
Want another challenge? Raise funds through your personal network to fund a farmer. Reach out to your family, friends, and peers and ask them to back you in the race by making a donation that will change the life of a sub-subsistence farmer and their family. Take a look at what just $25, $55 or $100 can do!

If you'd like to support a student at the Kakuswi Special School for the Deaf, you can do so for an entire year for only $450!

RACE GUIDELINES:
- We rely on the honor system. You don’t have to use a device to prove your miles or minutes.
- No all-day step counting, please use intentional miles. Please attribute your activity to the appropriate day -- don't combine workouts from multiple days.
- In addition to running and walking - LOTS of intentional activity -- dancing, swimming, yoga-ing, and many more -- can be converted to miles. Please select one of the general activity options (moderate or vigorous) and input how many minutes you did that activity. The software will automatically convert to running/walking miles.
- No activity completed before June 17, 2019 counts towards this virtual marathon! Only mileage added before the virtual marathon officially closes on July 19, 2019 23:59:59 EST will count in the leaderboards.
- If you finish the route early, keep logging miles to become Ultramarathoners! An Ultra leaderboard appears below the marathon leaderboard. Keep that competition alive right up to the very end!
- Last, but not least, it is more fun if you log activities as part of a group, comparing progress with friends and colleagues. With hundreds of people participating in this year’s event, joining a group can make a big difference. Go to the Athletes tab, click on the group you’d like to join, and select “race with this group.” You can create your own group too! Just add the desired group tag to your bio. Once the race begins, groups with more than 2 racers will appear on the Group Leaderboards!
