VCPM Sept 26, 20215.0 miles1.0 Daily Action of wRTV Daily Activations = 5.0 mileFound out that my area has a Environmental Advisory Council - how cool. I reached out about the importance of a climate action plan. The example letter WRTV sent from Day 4 was a huge help! Plus I asked this council if there was a specific city council member I could reach out to bc I ALSO discovered we don’t have a mayor. Who knew?!

VCPM Sept 24, 20215.0 miles1.0 Daily Action of wRTV Daily Activations = 5.0 mileFrom Day 3 Daily Activation - I visited my local park Norristown Farm Park and saw there was no land acknowledgment of the Lenni-Lenape people. I emailed my local council member Derrick Perry to explain the importance, what can we do to change this and asked if he would help to play a role in this simple gesture of equity. Let's see what he says!

VCPM Sept 21, 20215.0 miles1.0 Daily Action of wRTV Daily Activations = 5.0 mileDid a deep dive into the history of the land we're on. It's crazy! I've known for awhile now that this area/PA is Lənape Haki-nk (Lenni-Lenape) Land and I knew a little about the history. After researching more, it's astonishing to discover that Pennsylvania is one of 13 states that doesn't recognize Native American tribes. AND even if PA did recognize tribes, it would be unlikely that the Lenape would qualify simply because it would be difficult to prove they've had a continuous presence in this region. They have been pushed out so much that many now live in the Oklahoma area. Oklahoma! The Lenape means "the real people" and they are indigenous to parts of NY, eastern PA to NJ and the coast of DE and they lived here for thousand of years. Over 100 years they were forced out of their own land largely because of colonists sheer numbers and firepower, not to mention shady deals like the Walking Purchase of 1737. William Penn is a big name around here, his sons, would often sell the land without consent of local tribes. Actually sell land they didn't even own - how crazy is that?! They had come to this Walking Purchase agreement and the conditions were that land would be handed over to them to as far as a man could walk in a day and half (a fair unit of measurement). But the Penns hired 3 walkers and hired scouters who previously cleared a path so they got way more land than the Lenape had calculated. They refused to leave because of this and they were eventually forced out. At the same time there a push to destroy Lenape culture so it was forbidden to speak the language, wear the clothes or even have long braids. Colonists would marry Lenape women and their Native culture would be hidden and only passed down through word of mouth. So as they hid their culture through the preservation of oral traditions, it actually barred them from joining others in federal recognition. PA has never acknowledged Native American people but the Lenape people are trying to change that. They have a state recognition committee so the state will recognize them. The first step is with the state as Federal recognition is a different matter. The Lenape simply want a seat at the community table once again in their homelands. In one of the articles a spokesperson says "We are still here. We have something valuable to bring to the table. We just want to be welcomed back."
