Obviously, there are tons of great marathon training programs, for example the Higdon marathon training strategies and the Galloway walk-run method. And the NY RoadRoad Runners have their training programs too.
Those methods are great, but sometimes companions are what you need most. You need someone (or even better a group!) to compare notes with, cheer and hold you accountable.
If a runner runs alone in the forest and nobody hears about it, did the runner run? Well, actually, yes. But runs mean a lot more when we know others are with us… or at least aware of what we’re doing.
As this runner discovered when training with a virtual partner for a marathon, training partners don’t need to actually go along for every mile. Just knowing there’s someone out there going through what you’re going through makes a huge difference.
